1/4 Tank

Posted by on November 5, 2013

1/4 TankMy friend, Dave, once asked me, “If you had ¼ tank of gas left in your car, and that was all the gas that you could get, would you not be very careful as to how you use that gas?” Well, he continued to express that we have, at best, a ¼ tank left and we ought to be damned thoughtful as to how we want to spend it. This analogy resonated with me, as I have always felt that life was too short to waste. I suppose that growing older just adds a bit of urgency to the matter. I seem to have no interest in spending time with people I do not love or respect. I have decreased tolerance for the superficial. I no longer have the energy to argue with the misinformed or the bigoted or simply the small minded. I have come to view a single smile of my granddaughter as far superior to a thousand political or social theories, an afternoon in the garden to the best party in town, and of my top ten friends with whom I most enjoy spending time, at least one of them is a dog.
